I will readily admit that I have very little respect for rap. It's just jive-talkin' gibberish with an overabundant use of the words 'yo' and 'homey'. Frankly, I hardly consider someone ranting to a beat to really be music of any sort. Given my little respect for rap, it is rather surprising that I would put up a quote about Manau. However, this genre of music actually becomes much better when you can't understand the lyrics. And that's the fact that puts Manau's music a step above normal rap. I am fluent in French, and I still can't understand much of what he's saying! One of his songs seems to involve wind, sleeping and getting up in the morning. It may not be deep, but it is rather funny. The picture I used for this quote comes from some Manau webpage. I was shocked that such a thing existed. I'm not sure who those three guys are, or if any of them is actually Manau.
One of my most recent roleplaying adventures featured Manau. He was the cheap celebrity called in to sing a song during the ending credits. It was rather reminiscent of Vanilla Ice's Ninja Turtle rap at the end of that movie. Of course, the song sung by Manau could have little to do with the actual adventure. That's the way it goes with movies too. All the player characters knew about Manau, even though they had neither met him nor heard about him. But it was the perfect way to end the adventure: Manau rapping away while holding a prominent can of Coca-Cola. Because they sponsor everything, including my adventures and likely Manau as well.
I should really give credit where it is due. Considering his relative obscurity, I had never even heard of this Manau until his existence was pointed out by the one known as The Man. It was The Man who first introduced me to this incomprehensible french rap, and suggested I make use of it in an adventure. Rather than stick it to The Man, I elected to follow his advice, since it was clearly a brillant idea. The results were mixed. One player developed quite a taste for Manau, while another declared him terrible. In fact, there are some who would say that The Man's suggestion released a monster to the world. Validity of this point is still in question.
This quote is guaranteed to outrage a certain segment of the population. That's because it comes from Manau, some French rapper. Actually, he might be Quebecois. I'm not really sure, and don't consider it worth my time to find out. The point is that he speaks French, so you can draw your own conclusions about his origins. But not only does he speak French, he also raps in French.
