First of all, I will admit that I've had a Gadget quote at some point in the past. This was back in the early days of the site, when I didn't often bother to write anything about my quotes. As such, "Next time, Gadget!" never got the explaination it really deserved. So, in imitation of the inestimable Dr. Claw's unnerving persistance, I have come back with another gadget quote. Of course, if I was continuing to imitate Dr. Claw, this plan would also have to somehow fail, likely due to the pesky interferance of a nosy girl with a computer book and a cross-dressing dog. Although I was never a big fan of Penny, I have to admit that Brain was one of the show's biggest assets. I've yet to see another dog with his talents for disguise. He could always fool Gadget into believing he was some sort of (usually villainous) local. Then again, fooling Gadget wasn't all that hard. Not like killing Chief Quinby, which seemed all but impossible. Every episode would involve him getting blown up by his own exploding instructions, but he would somehow come out only blackened, but otherwise unscathed. And ready to repeat the performance next episode. Most amazingly of all, he didn't let this obviously painful tradition sour his relationship with Gadget, and was always willing to congratulate him on a job well done at the end of the episode.
Great heroes indeed, but they were only half the equation. Inspector Gadget featured equally brillant villains in the form of Dr. Claw and his evil MAD organization. Claw's appeal was obvious; he was everything that James Bond's Blofeld was meant to be, except with a much cooler voice and way less competence. His interminable determination to take out Gadget was right up there with Skeletor's drive to beat He-Man, and he didn't even have to deal with the latter's often shrill voice. The MAD agents were also great. If anyone needed to define the opposite of subtle, they need only think of the MAD agents. In fact, I would like to see a picture of these guys in dictionaries for just such a definition. I mean, they wore black jumpsuits with MAD written boldly across the front, and they openly discussed their evil plans without even a hint of shame. Now that's class!
Finally, no other cartoon can match the number of gadgets found in Inspector Gadget (hence the name). Admittedly, most of them were highly useless, but they were still cool. Personally, I would love to have a 'go go gadget quote' that could automatically generate a new quote of the week. Needless to say, such quotes would be of dubious quality, but some would say that's no different from the way things are now. And it would be cool.
