So then he starts monologuing!

This quote comes paraphrased right out of The Incredibles, the latest Pixar computer animated offering. The general consensus, with which I agree, seems to indicate that it is quite an incredible movie. I'm sure you'd never heard that one before. Anyway, although the film has several things going for it, I believe that a great deal of its appeal comes from two main elements. Puns and Frozone. And puns about Frozone, for that matter. If you've seen the movie, I think it's safe to assume you agree with my observation that Frozone was really kind of under-utilized, and deserved to have way more screen time. Because he was cool! See, I haven't even finished describing him, and already I'm in with the puns. His whole concept is like a slippery slope to wordplay. I thought I should point that out, just in case you hadn't noticed.

Unfortunately, Frozone is limited to the role of the 'superhero buddy' in the Incredibles. But I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he gets his own spin-offs. I can see it now: Chillin' with Frozone! His awesome super powers certainly warrant such treatment. They're almost as great as his name. They include the ability to shoot ice pretty much at will, an uncanny talent for snowboarding and a knack for IGNORING THE FORCES OF GRAVITY. You'd think the latter would be his most significant power, but it receives only tacit references during the movie. All in all, the only way to make Frozone cooler would have been to give him a giant fro, thus doubling the entendre of his name. Oh, and to give him a bigger role.

This particular quote comes from a scene in which Frozone and Mr. Incredible are having a discussion about the good ol' days, when they were in the prime of their crime-fighting careers. Frozone gets to telling this apparently (and literally) hilarious story about how this one super-villain had him on the ropes until said villain started monologuing. Which, as we all know, is the one weakness shared by villains everywhere, regardless of their other often eccentric personality quirks. I must admit that I've also been known to monologue. It hasn't yet caused my downfall, but I have the odd feeling that it might someday. Of course, this premonition won't stop me from continuing to do it.

I think one of the factors contributing to Frozone's popularity has to be that he's extreme. After all, he snowboards! I believe that sport falls right under the currently acceptable definition of extreme. As I mentioned last week, the public's really into extreme things at the moment. It doesn't really seem to matter what the activity in question actually involves, so long as it has received the distinction of being extreme. That's really why extreme debating is such a great idea. Fortunately, computer science is already ideally situated to jump in on this bandwagon. There's a pre-existing concept called extreme programming that should be fit to garner huge support from the masses. I'm hoping it might someday become a televised sport, because that? Would be extreme. And it might also be the only way I can fulfill my dreams of becoming an international media sensation.
