Expect More Flattery

The Ford Focus is quite a good car. If you discount the production fault that can cause wheels to go flying off at high speeds, it is practically perfect. So, I can't deny the greatness of the car, and I might even flatter it. But would this cause me to flatter some funny looking guy who may or may not have anything to do with this vehicle? I think not. And yet, that seems to be the main thrust of the posters advertising the Focus.

I will now describe these posters in some detail. They show some bald black guy gazing up at the reader, arms crossed and eyes extremely wide. He looks, quite frankly, extremely smug. At the top of the poster, words read, "Expect more flattery." Oh yeah, in a tiny square at the bottom is a picture of the Focus, with the words "Ford Focus" beside it. Now, the first few times I saw this picture, I was absolutely baffled. It took me a few minutes of examination to even figure out what was being advertised. At first, it seemed they were advertising the guy as some sort of 'man-for-hire'. Eventually, I spotted the tiny picture of the Focus and figured out what the product was. But the guy was still a mystery. If this was a poster for the car, why was the funny looking fellow in center stage, so to speak? And why should he Expect More Flattery? Even if the car is good, there's no apparent connection between him and the car. It's not like he's standing next to the car! The car's divided from him. So, why we're supposed to flatter him is quite unknown, but he's clearly expecting it. Did this man make the Focus? Buy a Focus? Steal a Focus? Get on a poster for no apparent reason? Wait, that would deserve flattery. Finally, I figured out what it must mean. The guy's incredibly wide eyes and silly posture must mean that he's actually caught in the powerful headlights of the Focus, like some wild animal. Flattering indeed.

I've actually had this quote in mind for quite some time, but I only decided to put it up now for a very important reason. This quote will commemorate the stupid poster forever. That's right; they got him! They took him away! The Focus poster with the funny guy is gone. It's been replaced, all over campus, by some movie poster featuring a big brick wall. If I wanted to see a big brick wall, I could just look at the side of my house. I wouldn't need to go to a movie to see it. However, I'm sure some of the bricks are fine actors, and would definitely deserve more flattery than the Focus guy.
